Social Media is one of those things that small business owners know that they need to do, but despite the best of intentions it always seems to be put on the long finger or it can be confusing where to start in the first place.
Here are some top social media tips for small business.
- Â Find Out Where Your Customers Are. Firstly you should determine which social media platforms, blogs or forums your customers are having conversations and where you can join in to add value. There are 2 tools we would recommend for listening out for your brand, industry or services, Google Alerts and Social Mention.
- Set Up Goals. Know what you want to achieve by setting up specific goals. Have a reason to get involved with social media, don't just post aimlessly because you think you should.
- Use One Social Media Tool At A Time. It's better to use one tool well than to try to do several poorly all at once. When you get the hang of one you can move on to another one. Facebook is generally the best one to start with.
- Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Start by listening and learning from others Don't wait until you become an expert or you will never get started. Learn as you go.
- Consistent Activity. It is better to be active for one hour per week at the same time, than do 3 hours one day and 5 minutes the next.
- Schedule Your Posts. You can pull together your content in advance and schedule when they appear over the week ahead. You could plan what product or service you would like to talk about and promote over the weekend and schedule in information to appear on your wall Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That takes the pressure of trying to come up with something on a Monday morning. Get organised!
- Set A Time Limit. It is easy to get distracted when working on social media. Set yourself a clear time limit when pulling together your content and stick to it.
- Use Analytics. Find out what is working for you. Use Facebook insights to see is there a specific topic, day or time of day which got you more reach or engagement. If you are driving people to your site make sure that you have Google Analytics installed.
- Set Up Realistic Expectations. Determine what you hope to gain and over what period of time.
- Get Some Help. If it is all too overwhelming, don't be afraid to get some help. The County Enterprise Boards run Social Media For Business Courses at regular intervals. They are an excellent introduction to the world of social media and the costs tend to be around €50 per person.
